Tonight, Thyroid Science presents four new publications that I  describe below. Blue links are available to access each publication.

Two of the publications are original studies that are important to the field of thyroidology. We have also published an important official statement from RLC Labs, Inc concerning Nature-Throid and Westhroid, and an editorial by our Editor-in-Chief, Dr. John C. Lowe, about these RLC Labs products.

| Taghavi Study |
Gisel Study | RLC Labs Statement | Lowe Editorial |

One study we published tonight is the second one Dr. Morteza Taghavi and her colleagues have published in Thyroid Science. She and her colleagues are with the Endocrinology Research Center, Mashhad Medical University, Ahmad Abad Street, Ghaen Hospital, Mashhad, Iran. Dr. Taghavi's new study concerns the incidence of HTLV-I among patients with Graves' disease in her area of Iran. Viral infections are often associated with autoimmune thyroid disease. However, in her new study, she did not find that the virus was associated with Graves' disease:
Taghavi, M., Mojgan, A.Z., Robab, A., Shokufeh, B., and Reza, R.: Incidence of Seropositivity for HTLV-I in Patients with Graves’ Disease in Mashhad, North East of Iran. Thyroid Science, 4(7):CLS1-3, 2009.

The second study we published tonight is by Drs. Justin J. Gisel,  John T. Daniels, and Charles D. Burger. These physicians are with the Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care, Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, in Jacksonville, Florida. They report that many patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension also have thyroid disorders. Their study assessed the relative value of testing for thyroid peroxidase antibodies, TSH levels, and a medical history for identifying patients with pulmonary hypertension who have thyroid disease:
Gisel, J.J., Daniels, J.T., and Burger, C.D.: Clinical Utility of Thyroperoxidase Antibody Testing in Patients with Pulmonary Hypertension. Thyroid Science, 4(8):CLS1-5, 2009.

We have also published an official statement from RLC Labs, Inc concerning the backordered status of its prescription desiccated thyroid products Nature-Throid and Westhroid.

Official Statement by RLC Labs, Inc. August 17, 2009

We have also published an editorial by our Editor-in-Chief, Dr. John C. Lowe. His editorial is an explanation of why Nature-Throid and Westhroid are presently backordered. He felt compelled to write the explanation because of an erroneous belief that appears to be common right now: that is, that the backordered status of Nature-Throid and Westhroid means that the products will soon no longer be marketed.
Lowe, J.C.: Why Nature-Throid and Westhroid are Temporarily Back-ordered (editorial). Thyroid Science, 4(8):1-2, 2009.
